Please tell us more about your empowerment program for young girls.
She's the First works with local NGOs in 11 countries in order to provide targeted education and empowerment programs. Students will be the first in their families to graduate from secondary school, and they'll do so with the support of mentors and educators who are dedicated to helping them lead successful lives.
As first generation female college graduates ourselves, can you please tell us more about what inspired you to begin this work?
I've always believed in the power of women -- growing up surrounded by women will do that to you! But I also believe in equality, and in justice, and education is the great equalizer. It's important to me that every girl has a shot at reaching her goals.
Please share your goals for the next three years.
We've started to fund grants for our partners to address challenges in their programming, and this year we'll hold our first-ever partner meeting in Kenya for partners located in East Africa. Over the next three years, you'll see us move more in the direction of providing ongoing training and grants to strengthen the infrastructure for students in our programs all over the world.
